Pediatric Pelvic Floor & Incontinence Program

Like any other developmental milestone, toilet training happens at different stages for every child. For children that need a bit more support to help gain the confidence, we're here to help.

Treating Pediatric Incontinence

Here at Interact Therapy, we are trained to treat children with pediatric incontinence and gastrointestinal disorders. These include daytime bladder leakage or “accidents”, bedwetting, BM “accidents”, constipation, frequent UTIs, going to the bathroom too many or too few times per day, or other bathroom related issues.

After an initial evaluation, your therapist will provide you with treatment recommendations that are designed specifically for your child's individualized needs.

Constipation

Constipation is one of the primary causes of urinary leaks and bedwetting. Common criteria for constipation in children include: two or fewer bowel movements per week, history of extensive stool retention, history of painful or hard bowel movements, at least one episode of fecal incontinence per week, history of large diameter stools that may obstruct the toilet, and presence of a large fecal mass in the rectum.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control. Under the age of three, it's common for children to not have full bladder control. As children grow older, they're able to learn to control their bladder. Causes of urinary incontinence may include anxiety, constipation, UTI's, not urinating often enough, incoordination or variances in tone of pelvic floor muscles, structural problems in the urinary tract, and more.

What to Expect

With specialized training in pediatric incontinence and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as board certification in the use of biofeedback for pelvic floor dysfunction, your therapist will be able to utilize an individualized and multidimensional approach to assist your child in meeting their goals. The goal is to help your child become the boss of their own bladder or bowel, so they can feel comfortable and confident doing the things they enjoy!

This comprehensive approach may include:

  • The use of a non-invasive biofeedback system to provide auditory and visual supports to the child while they are learning how to control and coordinate their own body
  • Establishing healthy bowel and bladder habits and tracking them
  • Education on pelvic health and understanding how the body works
  • Monitoring of diet, water, fiber intake
  • Environmental and positioning factors to consider
  • Manual techniques to address constipation
